Author: Robert A. McGuigan, Department of organisational Mathematics, Westfield State. Prerequisites: The prerequisites for this chapter are basic concepts of graph. theory. See Sections 9.1 and mintzberg’s managerial roles, 9.2 of Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications. A food web is a directed graph modeling the predator-prey relationship in an. ecological community. We will use this directed graph to romeo and juliet essay, study the question of. the minimum number of parameters needed to describe ecological competition. For this purpose we will consider how graphs can be represented as intersection.

graphs of families of sets. We will also investigate the axiomatic description of measures of status in. In an ecological system, the various species of plants and animals occupy niches. defined by the availability of managerial resources. The resources might be defined in organisational analysis terms.

of factors such as temperature, moisture, degree of acidity, amounts of nutrients, 226 Applications of Discrete Mathematics. These factors are subject to constraints such as temperature lying in a. certain range, pH lying within certain limits, etc. Managerial Roles? The combination of all these. constraints for a species then defines a region in n-dimensional Euclidean space, where n is the psychology symbol wallpaper, number of factors.

We can call this region the ecological niche. of the species in managerial question. For example, suppose we restrict ourselves to three factors, such as temperature, nutrients, and pH. Assume that the temperature must be between t1. and t2 degrees, the amount of nutrients between n1 and n2 and the pH between. a1 and a2. Then the ecological niche these define occupies the region of. 3-dimensional Euclidean space shown in Figure 1. Figure 1. An ecological niche.

Euclidean space which has as dimensions the various factors of temperature, pH, etc., is called an ecological phase space. Generally, no two distinct. species will have the same ecological niche in phase space; however, two species. compete if their ecological niches have non-empty intersection. A basic principle. of ecology, known as the principle of competitive exclusion, dictates. that species whose niches are too similar, or overlap too much, cannot coexist. If the factors defining the niche are independent, then the niche in phase space. would be a box such as that in romeo essay Figure 1. Mintzberg’s Roles? If the factors are not independent, i.e. the level of one depends on levels of others, then the niche would be some.

other type of set, e.g. Mount 1815? convex, but not a box. For example, consider the two factors temperature (t) and per cent humidity. (h). We might have constraints such as: t must be between 0 and 100, and h. must be between 0 and 100t ? t2. In this case temperature and humidity are. not independent; the possible values of h depend on the values of t. The region.

in two-dimensional space defined by mintzberg’s these constraints is not a rectangle. Our discussion of ecological communities and related concepts such as. Chapter 13 Food Webs 227. species, food webs, and mount, competition will be somewhat oversimplified in order. to make a brief presentation possible. Interested readers should consult reference. [1] for an in-depth treatment of these topics.

Our mathematical treatment. follows that of reference [6]. It may be difficult to know all the factors which determine an ecological niche, and some factors may be relatively unimportant. Hence it is useful to start with. the concept of managerial roles competition and theme, try to find the minimum number of dimensions. necessary for a phase space in which competition can be represented by managerial niche. One approach to this question is to consider the notion of the food web of. an ecological community. Definition 1 A food web of an ecological community is and juliet, a directed graph. with a vertex for each species in the community and mintzberg’s managerial, a directed edge from the. vertex representing species A to strong, the vertex representing species B if and only.

if A preys on B. Figure 2 shows a simple food web for managerial roles, a community of seven species: robin, fox, grasshopper, raccoon, salamander, milksnake, and toad. Figure 2. A simple food web. We can define competition using the food web. Two species compete if and.

only if they have a common prey. Thus, in the example of Figure 2, raccoon and. fox compete (since robin is a common prey), milksnake and strong, raccoon compete, 228 Applications of mintzberg’s managerial Discrete Mathematics. while salamander and robin do not compete. We use this competition relation. to define a graph called the al falah, competition graph.

Definition 2 The competition graph of a food web is roles, a simple graph with a. vertex for tambora 1815, each species. Two vertices are joined by an (undirected) edge if and. only if the species they represent have a common prey. Example 1 Find the competition graph for the food web of Figure 2. Solution: The competition graph for this food web is shown in Figure 3. Figure 3. A competition graph. To represent the competition relation in phase space we want to assign to.

each vertex of the competition graph a subset of Euclidean space of some dimension. in such a way that two vertices are joined by an edge in the competition. graph if and only if the sets assigned to these vertices have non-empty intersection. Figure 4 shows a representation of the competition graph of Figure 3, using an interval for each vertex. We have thus represented the managerial roles, competition. graph using only one dimension. Figure 4. Interval representation of a competition graph.

We can now state a general mathematical problem, but first we need to. develop some terminology. Chapter 13 Food Webs 229. Definition 3 A graph is an intersection graph for a family of sets if each. vertex is assigned a set in such a way that two vertices are joined by an edge if. and only if the corresponding sets have non-empty intersection. Definition 4 A graph is huntington clash of civilizations, called an interval graph if it is the mintzberg’s roles, intersection. graph for huntington clash of civilizations, a family of closed intervals.

Our goal is the representation of competition graphs of families of sets. in Euclidean n-space. Roles? Clearly the simplest case would be that of competition. graphs that are interval graphs. This would mean that only one ecological. factor is necessary to describe niche overlap. Example 2 Find the interval graph for the family of closed intervals A = Solution: We use the definition of intersection graph to obtain the graph of. Figure 5. An intersection graph. Example 3 Prove that the 4-cycle graph C4 of Figure 6 is not an interval. Solution: The proof depends on the order properties of the essay, real numbers.

Let. the interval corresponding to vertex n be [nl, nr]. Since the intervals for vertices. 1 and 2 overlap, we must have either 1l ? 2l ? 1r ? 2r or 2l ? 1l ? 2r ? 1r, Assume for specificity that 1l ? 2l ? 1r ? 2r.

The argument for mintzberg’s managerial, the other case. Since the interval for tambora 1815, vertex 3 must meet that for vertex 2 and must not. meet that for vertex 1, we must have 1l ? 2l ? 1r 3l ? 2r. Mintzberg’s? Now the interval. for vertex 4 must meet those for both vertices 1 and 3, so we have to have.

1l ? 4l ? 1r and 3l ? 4r ? 3r since interval 1 lies entirely to the left of interval. 3. However, since 2l ? 1r 3l ? 2r, the intervals for vertices 2 and 4 overlap, which is forbidden. 230 Applications of Discrete Mathematics. Figure 6. A graph that is not an mount, interval graph. The 4-cycle can, however, be represented as the intersection graph of a. family of boxes in Euclidean 2-space, as shown in managerial roles Figure 7. There are several methods known for determining whether a simple graph. is an interval graph. Organisational? A detailed discussion of this topic may be found in Roberts book [6]. Mintzberg’s Managerial? We simply state the characterization due to Gilmore and Hoffman. [3] without proof. Before the characterization can be stated, we need some.

Figure 7. Clash? A box representation. Definition 5 A graph H is a generated subgraph of a graph G if the vertices. of H are a subset of the vertices of G and vertices in H are adjacent in H if. and only managerial, if they are adjacent in G. Definition 6 The complement of a graph G is the graph G where the vertices.

of G are the vertices of G, and two vertices in G are adjacent if and only if they. are not adjacent in G. Definition 7 An orientation of huntington a graph G is an assignment of a direction to. each edge in G (which makes G into a directed graph). An orientation is transitive if whenever (u, v) and roles, (v,w) are directed edges, then (u,w) is a directed edge. Chapter 13 Food Webs 231. The characterization due to Gilmore and Hoffman is given by the following. Theorem 1 A graph G is an al falah, interval graph if and only if it satisfies the.

following two conditions: (i) The four-cycle C4 is mintzberg’s roles, not a generated subgraph of G, (ii) The complement of G is transitively orientable. Our goal in our study of organisational ecological competition is the managerial, representation of. niches in symbol wallpaper Euclidean space and competition by mintzberg’s managerial niche overlap. It seems desirable. in an huntington of civilizations, ideal representation that the mintzberg’s, factors determining the dimension of the ecological. phase space would be independent and the niches would be represented. as boxes, or Cartesian products of and juliet essay intervals. This leads us to the next part.

of this discussion, namely, when can we represent a graph as the intersection. graph of a family of boxes in n-space. Definition 8 The boxicity of a graph G is the roles, smallest n such that G is the. intersection graph of a family of boxes in Euclidean n-space. Note that an interval graph is simply a graph with boxicity equal to 1. It is organisational analysis, not entirely clear that every simple graph has a boxicity. The following. theorem resolves this difficulty. Theorem 2 Every graph G with n vertices is the intersection graph of a. family of boxes in Euclidean n-space.

Proof: Let v1, v2, . . . , vn be the vertices of mintzberg’s G. A box in Euclidean n-dimensional. space is the psychology symbol wallpaper, set of all n-tuples of real numbers (x1, x2, . . . , xn) such that. each xi is in some closed interval Ii. Now, for each k = 1. . . , n and each vertex. vi, define closed intervals Ik(vi) as follows. [1, 2] if i = k and is an edge in G. [2, 3] if i = k and is not an edge in G. For each vertex vi define a box B(vi) in Euclidean n-space by. 232 Applications of mintzberg’s managerial Discrete Mathematics. Thus, the clash of civilizations, box B(vi) corresponding to vi is the Cartesian product of the intervals. Ij(vi) for j = 1, . Mintzberg’s Managerial? . . , n.

Now we show that vi and vj are adjacent in G if and only if B(vi)?B(vj ) = ?. Mount Tambora? Thus the graph G is the intersection graph of the family of boxes B(vi). First, suppose that there is an edge joining vl and roles, vm. If k is al falah, different from both l and. m, then according to the definition, Ik(vl)? Ik(vm) is [1, 2]? [1, 2], [1, 2]? [2, 3], or [2, 3] ? [2, 3]. In any case we have Ik(vl) ? Ik(vm) = ?. If k=l or k=m then. Ik(vl) ? Ik(vm) = [1, 2] ? [0, 1] = ?. So, if there is an mintzberg’s managerial roles, edge joining ve and vm, then for all k, Ik(vl) ? Ik(vm) = ?. Organisational Analysis? Hence B(vl) ? B(vm) = ?. Now suppose that B(vl)?B(vm) = ?. Mintzberg’s Roles? Then for each k from huntington clash of civilizations, l to n, Ik(vl)? Ik(vm) = ?. Set k = l then Il(vl) = [0, 1] and Il(vm) must be [1, 2] for the. intersection to be nonempty. By definition of Il(vm), vl and vm are adjacent. Thus G is the intersection graph of the managerial, family of boxes B(vi).

This theorem shows that boxicity is well-defined. Unfortunately, there is. no efficient algorithm known for determining the analysis, boxicity of a general graph. There is no characterization known for graphs of any specific boxicity other. In fact, there are not many general classes of graphs for which the roles, boxicity. is known.

It is not hard to see that the boxicity of the n-cycle Cn is 2 for strong vs weak, n = 4. or larger, and mintzberg’s, this is left as Exercise 6. Another general class of graphs for which. the boxicity is known is the complete p-partite graphs. These are the graphs. Kn1,n2. np defined as follows: there are n1 + + np vertices partitioned into. p classes, where the ith class has ni vertices. Within a class no vertices are. adjacent, and every vertex in any class is adjacent to all vertices in the other. classes. Organisational? Roberts [6] showed that the boxicity of mintzberg’s managerial Kn1. np is equal to the number.

of ni that are larger than 1. One result which helps somewhat in tambora 1815 calculating the managerial roles, boxicity of a graph is. due to Gabai [2]. This theorem depends on the concept of independence of a. Definition 9 A set of edges in a graph is independent if they have no vertices. Gabais theorem [2] is the following, stated without proof. Theorem3 Let G be a simple graph. If the maximum size of an independent. set of edges of huntington clash of civilizations G is k, then G has boxicity less than or equal to k. Also, if G. has a generated subgraph consisting of k independent edges then the boxicity. of G is mintzberg’s, greater than or equal to k.

Chapter 13 Food Webs 233. Gabais theorem is and juliet theme essay, useful in determining the boxicity of relatively small. graphs and for certain families. In any case it limits the amount of trial and. In our study of competition we search for the representation of the competition. graph of a food web as the intersection graph of a family of sets in. Euclidean n-space for some n. As a consequence of the theorem proved above, this representation is always possible. Furthermore, we can use the boxicity. of the competition graph as an indicator of the minimum number of factors. essential for describing competition in the community.

Cohen [1] has studied. more than 30 single-habitat food webs published in the ecological literature and. has found that the mintzberg’s roles, competition graphs of all of them are interval graphs. That. is, in all cases one dimension suffices to strong dollar, represent competition by niche overlap.

It is not known whether this is a general law of ecology, but it does raise many. interesting questions. Mintzberg’s Roles? In some single-habitat communities a single dimension. for the niche space can be identified. It may be some obviously linear factor. such as temperature, body length or depth in water. However, it may well be. that more than one single dimension will work. And, of course, we cant expect.

the single-niche dimension to mount, be the same from community to community. Hypothetical food webs have been constructed such that their competition. graphs are not interval graphs, but these combinations of species have never. been observed in nature at the same time and place. The representation of graphs as intersection graphs of boxes has important. applications in mintzberg’s managerial ecology, as we have seen. Applications to such diverse fields.

as archaeology and automobile traffic control have also been investigated (see. reference [6]). We conclude with an additional application of food webs. In the study of of civilizations social systems it is often useful to measure the mintzberg’s managerial, status of an. individual in an organization. Mount? Harary [4] first introduced the idea of measuring. the status of a species in a food web. In ecology this status is usually called the. trophic level and is helpful in assessing the complexity and roles, diversity of a web.

The idea is al falah, that a web with many species at each trophic level has a high degree. of complexity. In ecology it is managerial roles, generally thought that more complex ecosystems. are more stable. In this section we study the question of how trophic status. can be defined in a food web.

If the food web is simply a directed path (a food chain) then it is easy to. define trophic status; just follow the al falah, order of the species in the chain. Some. other structures also allow for managerial, an easy definition of tambora trophic status. For example, we might think of species with no outgoing edges as being at the bottom of the. web. Suppose that for every vertex, all directed paths to vertices at the bottom. have the same length. Examples of such webs are given in Figure 8. 234 Applications of Discrete Mathematics.

Figure 8. Graphs of two food webs. In this kind of web, the trophic status of a vertex can be defined as the. length of a directed path from the vertex to the bottom. In general it is difficult to define trophic status in complicated food webs. Because more than one approach may be possible, we will use the term trophic.

status in this context rather than the term trophic level which is well-known in. the context of food chains. Our goal is to investigate how trophic status could. be measured rather than to develop a unique possibility. To start, we need some basic assumptions about food webs. In particular, we assume that our food web is managerial, acyclic, i.e. Organisational? that the directed graph has no.

cycles. Thus, there are no species s1, . Mintzberg’s? . Analysis? . , sn such that for i = 1, . . . , n ? 1, si. preys on si+1 and sn preys on s1. In particular there are no two species such. that each preys on managerial, the other. Thus, the prey relationship is asymmetric. We will take an axiomatic approach to symbol wallpaper, defining measures of trophic status. That is, we will state conditions which any reasonable measure should satisfy in. the form of axioms. A measure will then be acceptable if and only if it satisfies.

the axioms. The axioms will define an ideal model for the concept of measure. of trophic status. Our approach will follow that of Harary [4] and Kemeny. and Snell [5], who work with status in an organization, and the treatment in.

Roberts [6], which is more detailed. Definition 10 In a food web a species v is a direct prey of a species u if. there is a directed edge from u to managerial, v. Essay? A species v is an indirect prey of u if there. is a directed path from u to v. It could well happen that there are two species u and mintzberg’s, v neither of which is. an indirect prey of the strong vs weak dollar, other. Definition 11 If v is mintzberg’s managerial, a direct or indirect prey of u, then the level of v relative. to u is the and juliet theme, length of the shortest directed path from u to managerial roles, v. Chapter 13 Food Webs 235. We can now state some reasonable axioms for measures of trophic status. Let tW(u) be the measure of status in the food web W. The axioms are:

Axiom 1: If a species u has no prey then tW(u) = 0. Axiom 2: If, without otherwise changing the food web, we add a. new vertex which is a direct prey of u to get a new web W, then. Axiom 3: Suppose the web W is changed by al falah adding edges and/or. vertices in such a way that the mintzberg’s, level of some direct or indirect prey of. u is increased, and no direct or indirect prey of u has its level relative. to u decreased. If W is the new web, then tW (u) tW(u). These axioms make sense intuitively when we consider that we are saying that a. species with no prey is at the bottom level (Axiom 1), that if the number of prey.

of a species increases its status increases (Axiom 2), and that the status of a. species increases if its level relative to some indirect prey is increased (Axiom 3). There is a measure of status which satisfies the axioms. Harary [4] suggested. the following definition. Definition 12 If a species u has nk species at level k relative to huntington, u for roles, each. Theorem 4 The measure hW(u) satisfies Axioms 1-3. Proof: If u has no prey, then hW(u) = 0 because all the nk = 0. If we add a direct prey for essay, u, then n1 increases by 1, so the sum defining. hW(u) also increases. Likewise, if some direct or indirect prey of u at mintzberg’s managerial, level k relative to u is. moved to level k + n below u and no other direct or indirect prey of u has its.

level decreased, the sum for strong, h increases by at least kn, verifying Axiom 3. Kemeny and Snell [5] also show that if tW is any other measure of mintzberg’s managerial trophic. status satisfying Axioms 13 and having all its values nonnegative, then for all. species u, tW(u) ? hW(u). Thus, h is in a sense a minimal measure of trophic.

While h satisfies our axioms it fails to have other desirable properties. For. example, it seems reasonable that if tW is a measure of trophic status and v is. a direct or indirect prey of u, then. 236 Applications of Discrete Mathematics. The measure h does not have this property. Figure 9 shows an analysis, example of. an acyclic food web W with two vertices u and v for which v is a direct prey. of u but hW(v) hW(u). Figure 9. An acyclic food web.

In this example, hW(u) = 6 and hW(v) = 8. The problem we have found can be avoided if we modify our definition of. level of one species relative to another: If v is a direct or indirect prey of managerial roles u, then the level of v relative to u is the length of the longest directed path from u. It is not hard to show that if h is defined by the same formula as before, but. using the vs weak, new definition of level, then h satisfies Axioms 13 as well as having. the property that any species has higher status than any of its direct or indirect. prey (see reference [5]). The problem we encountered here demonstrates one of. the difficulties with the axiomatic approach.

Our problem lay in the definition. of level and this would not show up in any consideration of the reasonableness of. the axioms. Managerial? Ideally, all of the terms used in specifying the axioms should either. be left undefined or else be checked for reasonableness, just as the axioms. themselves are. Huntington Of Civilizations? In this light we would also have to examine the new definition.

Without referring to managerial roles, the notion of relative level in a food web, perhaps the. only requirement we can state for organisational analysis, a measure of trophic status is mintzberg’s, that if there is. a directed path from psychology symbol, u to v, then tW(u) ? tW(v). There are other ways to investigate complexity of food webs and relative. importance of managerial species in food webs. General methods of measuring complexity. in graphs can be applied to competition graphs and food webs. Organisational Analysis? For example, such ideas as the number of edges divided by the number of vertices, and the.

average out-degree and average in-degree might be useful. The importance, or. criticality, of a species in mintzberg’s managerial a food web could be studied by al falah investigating what. happens to roles, the web when the romeo and juliet, species is deleted from the web. For example, if. the web is disconnected when a species is removed that would indicated a high. level of importance.

Mintzberg s 10 Managerial Roles Management at Work

A Man Is Punctual: The Importance of Being on Time. The life of George Washington was characterized by a scrupulous regard for punctuality. When he asked a man to managerial roles bring by romeo and juliet theme some horses he was interested in buying at five in the morning, and the man arrived fifteen minutes late, he was told by the stable groom that the general had been waiting there at five, but had now moved on managerial to other business, and al falah, that he wouldnt be able to examine the horses again until the following week. When he told Congress that hed meet with them at noon, he could almost always be found striding into roles the chamber just as the clock was striking twelve. Washington#8217;s promptness extended to his mealtimes as well. Symbol. He ate dinner each day at exactly 4 oclock, and when he invited members of Congress to dine with him, and they arrived late, they were often surprised to find the president halfway done with his meal or even pushing back from the table. To his startled, tardy guest he would say, #8220;We are punctual here.

My cook never asks whether the company has arrived, but whether the mintzberg’s managerial, hour has come.. And when Washington#8217;s secretary arrived late to a meeting, and blamed his watch for his tardiness, Washington quietly replied, #8220;Then you must get another watch, or I another secretary.#8221; George Washingtons passion for punctuality was born from his youthful study of The Rules of Civility his repeated copying of maxims like Undertake not what you cannot Perform but be Careful to keep your Promise . For Washington, being on strong dollar time was a way of showing respect to others, and he expected to be treated with the same level of mintzberg’s roles respect in return. We may no longer live in an age of knickers and powdered wigs, but being punctual is just as important as it ever was. It has been called a homely, but solid virtue, and it certainly doesnt cause ones breast to swell in romeo and juliet, the way that pondering courage or resolution does.

But related as punctuality is to discipline and mintzberg’s managerial roles, self-mastery, to integrity and respect, it is if not particularly sexy still an and juliet theme, essential component of the character of an upstanding man. Today well explore why this is so, and then on mintzberg’s managerial roles Wednesday well cover why some men struggle with being on and juliet theme time despite their best efforts, along with tips on how to mintzberg’s overcome the habit of always running behind. The habit of being prompt once formed extends to everything meeting friends, paying debts, going to church, reaching and leaving place of business, keeping promises, retiring at night and organisational, rising in the morning, going to the lecture and town-meeting, and, indeed, to every relation and act, however trivial it may seem to observers. William Makepeace Thayer, Tact and mintzberg’s, Grit , 1882. The importance of punctuality is not universal and varies from culture to culture. In some places like Latin America and huntington, the Pacific Islands, life moves at a different pace and managerial roles, meeting times are meant to strong vs weak be fuzzy. But this does not negate the value of punctuality to a man living in a culture that does define being on time more strictly, just as the well-rounded man of the West seeks competence in things like shaking hands, wearing a tie, working out with a kettlebell, and holding open doors for women, even if such things are not practiced the world over. #8220;I have always been a quarter of an hour before my time, and it has made a man of me.#8221; -Horatio, Lord Nelson. Being punctual strengthens and reveals your integrity.

If you tell someone that you will meet them at a certain time, you have essentially made them a promise. Mintzberg’s Roles. And if you say youll be there at 8:00, and yet arrive at organisational 8:15, you have essentially broken that promise. Being on time shows others that you are a man of your word. Being punctual shows you are dependable. A man can always be found at his post, carrying out the mintzberg’s managerial roles, duties needful for that time.

People know they can rely on organisational analysis such a man if he says he will be there, hell be there. But if a man is not punctual, others cannot depend on him #8212; they do not know where he will be when they need him. His associates will begin to feel he cannot organize his own time, and these doubts will seep into matters beyond the clock, as it naturally raises the question: If he is careless about time, what else is he careless about ?#8221; Benjamin Franklin once said to an employee who was always late, but always ready with an excuse: I have generally found that the man who is good at an excuse is good for nothing else .#8221; Being punctual builds your self-confidence. Showing up on time not only tells other people you are dependable, it teaches you that you can depend on mintzberg’s yourself. The more you keep the promises you make, the al falah, more your self-confidence will grow.

And the more you gain in self-mastery, the less you will be at the mercy of your compulsions and managerial roles, habits, and mount 1815, the more in control of your life you will feel. Managerial. Being punctual assures youre at your best. After riding someones bumper, speeding like a maniac, scanning for cops, and cursing at red lights, its hard to then turn your focus to making a presentation at mount 1815 a meeting or charming a date youre shaky and mintzberg’s roles, depleted from the adrenaline and stress. Analysis. But when you show up on time, better yet a little early, you have a few minutes to collect your thoughts, review your materials, and get your game face on. #8220;Soldiers should be minutemen. Punctuality is one of the mintzberg’s managerial, most valuable habits a soldier can possess. Christopher Columbus Andrews, Hints to Company Officers on Their Military Duties , 1863. Being punctual builds and reveals your discipline. The punctual man shows that he can organize his time, that he pays attention to details, and that he can put aside this to do that he can set aside a pleasure to take care of mount business. Mintzberg’s. #8220;There is great dignity in being waited for, said one who was in this habit, and who had not much of which he need be vain, unless it was this want of promptness. John Todd , The Students Manual , 1854.

Being punctual shows your humility . That bumper sticker maxim: #8220;Always late, but worth the wait#8221; shows that tardiness and theme essay, an overestimation of roles ones worth sometimes go hand in hand. People will be glad to see you when you arrive, but they would have been gladder still had you come on time. Being punctual shows your respect for others . Being late is a selfish act, for it puts your needs above anothers. You want an extra minute to do what youd like, but in symbol, gaining that minute for yourself, you take a minute from another, which is why. Mintzberg’s Roles. Being late is a form of stealing. Thats a tough truth, but its a truth nonetheless. Huntington Of Civilizations. When you make others wait for roles you, you rob minutes from them that theyll never get back. Psychology Wallpaper. Time they could have turned into money, or simply used for the things important to them. In coming to mintzberg’s managerial roles meet you at the agreed upon hour, they may have made sacrifices woken up early, cut short their workout, told their kid they couldnt read a story together and al falah, your lateness negates those sacrifices. If you wouldnt think of taking ten dollars from another mans wallet, you shouldnt think of stealing ten minutes from him either.

Being punctual shows you value time yourself, and mintzberg’s, thus wouldnt think of depriving others of this precious, but limited resource. It has been said that time is money. That proverb understates the huntington clash, case. Time is mintzberg’s managerial roles a great deal more than money. If you have time you can obtain moneyusually. But though you have the wealth of a cloak-room attendant at the Carlton Hotel, you cannot buy yourself a minute more time than I have, or the cat by wallpaper the fire has. Arnold Bennett, How to Live on Twenty-Four Hours a Day , 1910. Being late disturbs the experiences of other people. Your tardiness not only robs others of their time, but of the fullness of mintzberg’s managerial roles their experiences as well. The student who interrupts a professor in the middle of his lecture; the family which climbs over you to get to their seats at the middle of the row in the theater; the man who opens the romeo theme, creaky door in the middle of a eulogy. When an old man was once asked why he had been so punctual in arriving at his church on time for decades, he replied, I made it my religion not to disturb the religion of others ..

Being late strains your relationships. Mintzberg’s Roles. When youre late in meeting other people, it makes them feel under-valued, that whatever you couldnt pull yourself away from was more important or that they didn#8217;t mean enough to you to warrant allotting sufficient time to analysis arrive on schedule. The guest who flies in to see you feels like a dope standing at managerial the airport alone, your date feels awkward sitting at the restaurant by herself, and your child feels abandoned as she waits with her teacher for you to arrive, all the other children having already been picked up from school. Symbol. Being late hurts your professional career. Whether youre an employee or in business for managerial yourself, being late can hinder your professional success. Many companies have strict policies about symbol wallpaper, punctuality get a few write-ups and youre gone. Of course, if you arrive late to the job interview, you probably wont land the mintzberg’s roles, position in the first place. And Juliet Theme. And if youre trying to win over a new client, arriving ten minutes late isnt going to roles get things off on the right foot, in the same way that promising to get something to him by a certain date and then failing to organisational analysis do so, may have him looking elsewhere for mintzberg’s managerial your services. Being late takes a toll on your life. Always running behind simply hurts you in all areas of strong dollar your life.

It results in lost opportunities: missing a plane, missing a meeting, missing an important part of a lecture, missing a wedding. It creates stress and can lead to car accidents and traffic tickets. It results in embarrassment and managerial roles, forces you to come up with excuses for why youre late, putting a strain on al falah your honesty. Managerial Roles. Basically, it makes your life more complicated; for men seeking to dollar simplify their lives, cultivating punctuality is an essential part of that path.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Presentation and Management in the Haitian American Child. A case study of a young Haitian American is managerial, presented that is illustrative of organisational cultural issues that influence care of those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Medications are the mintzberg’s roles preferred treatment for huntington clash, ADHD and can be combined with psychological intervention. However, many Haitians and Haitian Americans see psychoactive medications as leading to substance abuse or mental illness. Efficacious psychosocial treatments include contingency management, parent training, and behavior therapy; cognitive-behavioral treatment has not been helpful.

Complementary and alternative medicine might have appeal; primary care physicians can help families to assess such treatments and not to be enticed by expensive ones of little benefit. A determinant of the treatment a family pursues is their perception of the cause of the ADHD behaviors. While there is no term for ADHD in the Haitian-Creole language, in the Haitian culture the behaviors consistent with the diagnosis might be interpreted as indicating a poorly raised child whose behavior could be modified by mintzberg’s managerial roles, parental discipline, an intentionally bad child, or a psychically victimized child suffering from an #x0201c;unnatural#x0201d; condition. #x0201c;Natural#x0201d; ailments are attributed to natural forces (e.g., wind, temperature), while #x0201c;unnatural#x0201d; ones are attributed to bad spirits or punishment by al falah, God. Roles. Families may #x0201c;lift their feet#x0201d; ( Leve pye nou : to mount, see a Hougan or voodoo priest) to determine the unnatural cause. Haitian Americans often combine therapeutic foods that are considered cold in nature, natural sedatives and purgatives from herbal medicine, religious treatments, and Western medicine.

Immigrants often lack support of mintzberg’s extended families in clash of civilizations an environment not supportive of their interpretation of child behaviors and mintzberg’s managerial roles traditionally accepted parental disciplinary style. Stigma, language, cultural conceptions, concerns about governmental agencies, and physician bias can all be barriers to care for immigrant families. Primary care and behavioral integration are useful in managing families from other cultures. More than ever in tambora 1815 the United States, it is nearly impossible to find a medical practice with a patient population that does not include cultural and ethnic diversity. While this reality is broadly recognized, clinicians and patients often face challenges in communicating with one another regarding health concerns. Managerial Roles. These challenges may be due in part to cultural differences in understanding and interpreting illness. The importance of cultural issues on analysis, mental health care was highlighted in 2000 in managerial the first-ever Surgeon General's report on mental health.

1 National efforts at education in cultural competency have taken root in various ways in medical centers, practice groups, teaching institutions, and mount community health centers. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is mintzberg’s roles, one of the most commonly diagnosed chronic mental conditions of childhood. Romeo Theme Essay. ADHD has a large genetic component to its etiology, 2, 3 and alterations in mintzberg’s the noradrenergic and dopamine systems lead to dysfunction in higher cortical processing related to attention, alertness, and executive functions (e.g., planning, working memory, abstract reasoning, mental flexibility). 4. ADHD has been reported in all continents of the world. Prevalence studies for many countries do not exist; however, studies have been conducted in China, Thailand, Israel, Turkey, Brazil, India, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Al Falah. 5 Although the signs and symptoms of ADHD are basically the same in these diverse countries, they each represent a different ethno-socio-cultural context in which the condition is roles, interpreted and responded to by patients, their families, caring professionals, and others. Vs Weak Dollar. 6 Several recent studies demonstrate that in 40#x00025; to 70#x00025; of children, ADHD persists into adulthood. 7, 8. Although ADHD has been well established as a condition in children worldwide, the subtler question of how the managerial roles interpretation of symptoms and behaviors varies between locales remains elusive.

Studies describing the interpretation of ADHD symptoms in different cultures are extremely limited. African American parents have been shown to be more unsure of the potential causes and treatments of ADHD and less likely to connect the school system to organisational analysis, ADHD issues than white parents. Mintzberg’s Managerial Roles. 9 In another school-based study, white children with ADHD were twice as likely as African American children to receive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment, and the threshold of huntington of civilizations parental recognition and seeking of services contributed to this discrepancy. 10 In a third study, African American children were identified with ADHD symptoms at higher rates than white children. 11 Compared to managerial, white teachers, African American teachers rated children as presenting more ADHD symptoms.

12 A similar study compared Hispanic teachers' and non-Hispanic white teachers' assessments of hyperactive-inattentive behaviors portrayed in standardized tapes of white and Hispanic children. Hispanic teachers were more likely than white teachers to score Hispanic students above the clinical cutoffs for strong, ADHD. 13 Whether such discrepancies are due to ethnic differences in behavior, limitations in the cross-cultural validity of diagnostic measures, or bias in mintzberg’s managerial raters' assessments of strong vs weak dollar behavior is uncertain. More than 2 million Haitian Americans reside in the United States, and this cultural group has a presence in every state. The following case study of a young Haitian American illustrates the cultural issues that can influence the care of a person with ADHD and the difficulties that can result from mintzberg’s managerial roles, culturally based disagreement or inadequate communication between medical professionals, educators, social service personnel, and families. Mr. A is 1815, a 25-year-old man with a history of ADHD. He was an overactive child from early infancy, and his parents initially attributed his exuberant behavior to the natural tendencies of his sex. Mr. A's parents tried their best to managerial roles, keep his behavior under control by psychology symbol, corralling him in his crib, verbally disciplining him, and mintzberg’s roles occasionally spanking him. From when Mr.

A was 3 years of age, his parents became increasingly aware of his hyperactivity, impulsivity, and huntington of civilizations inability to follow directions. Throughout his pre-school years, he was repeatedly suspended from school and roles was forced to move from clash, one school to the next. In his community, he developed a reputation for being mal #x000e9;lev#x000e9; #x02014;a French term for #x0201c;badly reared,#x0201d; which in turn reflected negatively on his parents within their extended family and managerial roles community. At age 5, Mr. A was diagnosed by a specialist as having ADHD.

His parents accepted counseling to help manage their son's condition, but declined the use of medication. Later, during his elementary school years, another clinical assessment confirmed the diagnosis of ADHD. This time, Mr. A's mother accepted the use of medication, but stopped it and refused to al falah, consider any other medication when side effects placed Mr. A into a #x0201c;zombie-like#x0201d; state that included sluggishness, difficulty sleeping, and loss of appetite. When Mr. A's parents halted his medication, school staff registered their concern with the Department of Social Services by filing a child neglect report. Managerial. Mr. Huntington. A's parents were evaluated for social services; however, these services included no interpreter, nor economic or social support. His parents were placed on the defensive all the time and began to feel threatened, stating that #x0201c;the focus was no longer on #x0005b;Mr. A's#x0005d; condition, but on mintzberg’s managerial, our parental abilities.#x0201d; As a result, to attend to Mr.

A and clash of civilizations coordinate his care, his mother stopped working outside the mintzberg’s home. Unable to navigate the 1815 different agencies that had become involved with their family, and believing a more disciplinary and mintzberg’s controlled environment might help, Mr. A's parents first sent him to Haiti to live with grandparents and 1 year later sent him to a Haitian boarding school. Neither environment had an effect on his behavior. Two years later, when he returned to live with his parents in the United States, his father built his own life around a tight schedule to tutor, mentor, and supervise Mr. Al Falah. A's school activities. Mintzberg’s Managerial. Mr.

A eventually graduated from high school, but was unfocused and performed poorly in the classroom. After graduation, Mr. And Juliet. A participated in several training programs but has yet to complete one. He continues to be hyperactive and unfocused. At work, he is known as a #x0201c;good guy#x0201d; who regularly jumps to defend coworkers, a behavior that often costs him his own employment. His parents are finally convinced that medication would be beneficial, but Mr. A refuses to take medications and denies his disorder.

WHAT DIAGNOSTIC STRATEGIES ARE USEFUL IN PRIMARY CARE PRACTICE TO CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS OF ADHD? Table 1 lists the DSM-IV criteria for mintzberg’s managerial roles, the 3 subtypes of ADHD. These are (1) predominantly inattentive (has at least 6 of 9 inattention behaviors), (2) predominantly hyperactive-impulsive (has at least 6 of 9 hyperactive-impulsive behaviors), and (3) combined (has at least 6 of 9 for both inattention and hyperactive-impulsive behaviors). Due to their ability to function with ADHD during adolescence, children with the clash of civilizations inattentive subtype of ADHD tend to be the easiest group to manage and are the least likely to have recurring problems; however, they often are the mintzberg’s roles hardest to diagnose. Hyperactivity behaviors often start by a child's fourth birthday, peak around age 7 to al falah, 8 years, and managerial decrease greatly by adolescence. 1815. Impulsive behaviors follow the same early course, but rather than declining in adolescence, remain a problem for life. 7, 14, 15 Impulsive behaviors in adolescence may result in problem drinking and drug use, and impulsive spending in adulthood.

In contrast to mintzberg’s roles, hyperactivity and impulsivity, inattention often does not become evident until age 8 or 9 years, but, like impulsivity, then remains a problem for life. By DSM-IV criteria, the onset of symptoms must occur before the age of 7 years, persist for at least 6 months, be present in more than 1 setting (e.g., school, home, after-school program), and huntington be excessive for the development level of the child. Mintzberg’s Roles. In addition, an individual's behaviors should affect at least 1 aspect of life, such as the school, family, or work environment. As with Mr. Al Falah. A, ADHD commonly disrupts daily functioning and development in multiple areas. The diagnostic differential for many of the behaviors found in ADHD includes emotional and mintzberg’s managerial roles behavioral problems (e.g., depression, anxiety disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder, conduct disorder) developmental problems (e.g., learning disabilities, mental retardation, conditions such as fragile X syndrome), and medical conditions (e.g., sensory deficits, seizures, fetal alcohol syndrome, thyroid disorders). For recent immigrants, these conditions may present at an age beyond that commonly encountered by American clinicians. Environmental concerns and experiences can also lead to psychology symbol, behaviors mimicking ADHD and can be particularly difficult to define in mintzberg’s managerial recent immigrants. 16, 17 These include culturally different parenting approaches, parental psychopathology, stressful home environment, lack of experience with the American school environment, inadequate language skills, and 1815 child abuse or neglect.

18 A substantial number of individuals with ADHD will also have comorbid psychiatric conditions (e.g., depression, oppositional defiant disorder, learning disabilities). A variety of rating scales are available and helpful in evaluating children (see http://nichq.org); however, most of these have been validated in referral populations rather than primary care settings and may not be generalizable to immigrant populations. These scales include ones for use by clinicians, parents, and roles teachers. Also, collecting information from other settings (e.g., summer programs, after-school programs) may provide additional helpful insight, particularly if the rater is from a background similar to the patient, but not a family member. For older patients who do not recall enough about their childhood, clinicians should have them speak to relatives to mount, gather their childhood histories. For example, clues to onset before age 7 years might include being held back or suspended in early school years, old report cards indicating behavior problems, or stories of being difficult to control. Scales for adults (e.g., the Wender Utah Rating Scale, 19 also available in mintzberg’s roles French 20 ; the Copeland Symptom Checklist for Attention Deficit Disorders 21 ; the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale 22 ) can be useful, but yield large numbers of romeo theme essay false positives and cannot be relied on for diagnosis without supportive evidence from clinical assessment.

23. Treatment approaches to mintzberg’s, ADHD include an organisational analysis, array of psychotropic medications, behavioral and psychological treatments, and complementary and alternative medicine approaches. Medications are generally the preferred treatment modality and can be combined with behavioral or psychological interventions, especially in children with behavioral problems or comorbid psychiatric conditions. Stimulant medications and psychosocial treatment have been the mintzberg’s roles major foci of clinical research; however, the duration of most randomized trials has been 3 months or less, and organisational thus the literature on long-term treatment is sparse. In general, studies suggest that stimulants and psychosocial treatments are efficacious. 24, 25 They also indicate that treatment with stimulants is superior to psychosocial treatment. 26. Short-term trials of mintzberg’s managerial stimulants support their efficacy, with response rates in the 70#x00025;-to-90#x00025; range. 27 Methyl-phenidate and huntington clash of civilizations dextroamphetamine are the most studied stimulants.

While there are longer-acting stimulants, these do not appear to provide any improvement in efficacy. Studies have found that stimulants improve the defining symptoms of ADHD and associated aggression. Managerial. However, there are not consistent findings that improvement in symptoms leads to al falah, improvement in academic achievement or social skills. 28, 29. Aside from studies suggesting the mintzberg’s roles efficacy of using stimulants, there are also studies of al falah antidepressants showing that tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., imipramine, desipramine, nortriptyline) produce improvements over placebo. Managerial Roles. 30 The primary concern regarding their use is the risk of cardiac side effects, especially in psychology wallpaper overdose. Atomoxetine also has proven efficacy for ADHD 31, 32 ; it is the mintzberg’s roles only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for and juliet theme essay, use in managerial roles adult ADHD, is not a controlled medication, and might be particularly useful when possible comorbid substance abuse is a concern. 33 However, it does have a new black-box warning regarding the potential for severe liver injury, based on 2 reports (1 of a teenager and 1 of an adult). Psychosocial treatments of analysis ADHD with demonstrated efficacy include behavioral strategies such as contingency management (e.g., point/token reward systems, timeout, response cost) that is conducted in mintzberg’s the classroom, parent training (parent is taught child management skills), and organisational analysis clinical behavior therapy (parent, teacher, or both are taught to use contingency management procedures). 34 In contrast, cognitive-behavioral treatment (e.g., self-monitoring, self-instruction, problem-solving strategies, self-reinforcement) has not been found to mintzberg’s roles, be helpful in children with ADHD.

35, 36. Complementary and clash alternative medicine strategies are very commonly used and might have particular appeal to families from other cultures. 37 Such therapies include special diets and supplements, megavitamins, applied kinesiology, and biofeedback; however, their benefits have not been demonstrated in clinical trials. 38 Diet, including reducing sugar, affects behavior in mintzberg’s roles less than 1#x00025; of and juliet children. 39 One role in which the primary care physician can be helpful is to mintzberg’s managerial roles, help families assess alternative treatments and not be enticed by expensive treatments of little benefit.

The treatment of ADHD should be viewed as involving 3 stages of strong dollar therapy: initiation and roles titration, maintenance, and termination.
